Kasumi ▶️ is a Flank Champion in Paladins, added on October 12th, 2022.
Lore[]
This is Kasumi's official bio currently found in her champion page in-game.
Some pains persist beyond our physical existence. The bitterest concoctions pale compared to the taste of betrayal by those you hold dear. Once, by a house meant to protect. Twice, by family with barren hearts. Thrice, by the world. You couldn't imagine such pain...
Thankfully, you won’t have to imagine. Powers from beyond the grave infuse this angry spirit on her path of vengeance, and your pain pleases her. It is your privilege to suffer at her hands. It is your fate to atone for the sins of the world. It is your honor to WRITHE. Now, struggle, and die — and offer your souls to Kasumi, Death’s Howl. For she is coming for you all.
This is an unofficial version of Kasumi's bio intended to more clearly present all currently known information regarding her. Sources can be found here.
Eons ago, Kasumi was originally a regular human, but after three unexplained betrayals, she was filled with such vengeance she persisted after death and became a ghost, haunting forests in the furthest corners of the Realm, where she attacks and kills everyone she comes across until she figures out who she wants vengeance on.
Summary[]
Kasumi is an unusual flank champion who relies on applying beneficial stacks before picking off enemies. Her abilities give her ample opportunity to catch enemies off guard and make fights asymmetrical. However, she has limited range, an unusual movement ability, as well as needing to apply Curse stacks to keep up with enemies.
Skills[]
Kasumi has a passive system called "Curse", which lets her weapon and all her abilities apply Curse stacks on enemies. The more stacks they have, the more damage they take from Kasumi's Non-Ultimate sources, while also reducing the damage affected enemies dish out.
Kasumi's primary is her Yokai Doll that allows her to damage enemies and apply a single stack of Curse, or transfer already existing ones between enemies per attack.
Savage Tear is her secondary fire, which can do more damage than her primary and applies 3 Curse stacks on targets, while healing Kasumi depending on the amount of Curse stacks they already have.
Kasumi's Primary Ability, Spirit Traps, allows her to place up to 3 invisible traps. If an enemy gets close, the trap explodes in an area of effect, damaging and slowing enemies, and applying 3 stacks of Curse.
Her Movement Ability is Body and Soul, which has her send forth her invisible soul at increased speed and jump height, leaving her body behind as it takes reduced damage, and teleporting her body to her soul when the ability is over or upon reactivation.
For her Ultimate Ability, Kasumi has Bitter Betrayal that applies a mark on an enemy which - after a short delay - sends out several large projectiles in all directions. Enemies hit by said projectiles, as well as the initial target are Disarmed, inflicted with 5 stacks of Curse, and take a large chunk of damage over time.
Talents and Cards[]
Kasumi's talents provide her with the following:
- Increase Kasumi's movement speed and ultimate charge gain with each active Curse stack, with Empowered Curse.
- Spirit Traps allow Kasumi to teleport to them when enemies trigger them, manually detonating them when she teleports, Fearing enemies, and applying full stacks of Curse on them, with Haunted Ground.
- After Body and Soul is over, Kasumi true-heals for at least 15% of her health and an additional percentage based on the damage she's taken, with Unfinished Business.
Most of Kasumi's cards focus on self-healing, increasing movement speed, cooldown reduction, augmentation of abilities, and stack application.

Trivia[]
Lore
- Similarly to Kasumi herself, the crow on her hat is also a ghost.[3]
- Following Kasumi's release, a short clip was tweeted showing a Japanese type Ouija board that Kasumi was supposedly using to share a message. The letters hovered over present the message "アイコ のい え", which seems to translate to "Aiko's House". While this points to the theory that the house which betrayed Kasumi was House Aico, this doesn't confirm the connection for various reasons, most notably being that Kasumi has outright admitted she doesn't actually know who betrayed her.[6]
References
- Kasumi's old talent, 'Spirit Bombs', is a reference to the Spirit Bomb attack from Dragon Ball.
Promotion
- Kasumi's teasers can be seen here.
- (Teaser 1) "In the furthest corners of the Realm, stories tell of something wicked inhabiting the shrouded forests. Its residents have been exchanging rumors of their ancestral home being haunted."
- (Teaser 2) "Death is a flittering darkness present within the light of our daily lives. Betrayal, however, is a surprise one rarely accounts for when peering into their future."
- (Teaser 3) "The sting of betrayal can last eons, breeding a sense of retribution into one's soul that can persist beyond death itself."
- (Teaser 4) "My desire for vengeance will never be quelled. I am Kasumi, Death's Howl. 罪を償って魂を捧げよ"
Concepts
- One of the first concepts for Kasumi originally featured her as a "drowned witch", from from the Aico Tundra, though she wasn't a ghost at this stage in development. This early concept also utilized a book as a weapon, which would've seemingly allowed her to summon blue tentacles.[7]
- Another early concept featured Kasumi in a bright green dress wielding a short scythe and bright pink skulls, but most of the developers preferred her darker design.[8]
- Kasumi's weapon seems to have taken awhile to settle on, as concept art featuring Kasumi's final design shows her wielding an old ethereal koto, with her using the strings to summon projectiles such as kunai.[9][10]
- An alternate version of the card Deadly Trap, which covers Kasumi in shadow, was used for her first teaser.
- Kasumi was the first champion since Ying inThe First Open Beta, to change roles, Kasumi was originally a Damage before becoming a Flank.
Other
- Kasumi's placeholder name while in development was "Bird Lawyer".[5]
- Kasumi's ultimate voice line was was changed upon release, with the original, あなたの魂を私のものだよ! (▶️), having the phrase, だよ ('dayo'), removed, making the line less casual / friendly.
- Kasumi's introduction voice line "つゆのよわ梅雨の様ながらされながら。." ▶️ is a haiku.
Champion Skins
Evil Spirit
- A spirit of the evil variety. Thrilling stuff.
Lovestruck
- Concepts for this skin can be seen here.[12]
- As mentioned in two pieces of concept art, this version of Kasumi was childhood friends with Class President Rei, but Rei stopped talking to Kasumi because she was way too into stabbing things. She also found the nails she uses in her hair and for stabbing things in a shop class.[12]
- This skin bears some resemblance to Himiko Toga from My Hero Academia.
- Class President Rei appears as this skin's doll, while the Valedictorian skin appears as this skin's Spirit Lure.[13]
- This skin appears in the Mine Forever avatar, while the Class President Rei doll appears in the Class Puppet avatar.
- The Drama Lord spray is also themed after this skin.
- This skin shares its theme with Schoolyard Maeve, Study Hall Maeve, Class President Rei, and Valedictorian Rei.
