This is Makoa's official bio currently found in his champion page in-game.


Once the dedicated protector of Turtle Cove, the island home of the Ska'drin, the ancient Makoa has now been summoned to the mainland. In his absence, he fears that he cannot ensure the safety of the volcanic islands.

With the greater threat in the Realm, he's taken to the land to make sure those he protects have a home to return to. With him, he brings the ocean's fury and the tortoise's indomitable resilience, as well as various naval implements, to bear against those who would defile the natural world.

However, long has he been away from home... what has come of the Ska'drin he has left behind. Was he wrong to have left?

This is an unofficial version of Makoa's bio intended to more clearly present all currently known information regarding him. Sources can be found here.


The dedicated protector of the Temple Isles, Makoa has since been summoned to the mainland by an unknown force, where he eventually joined the Resistance for some reason.

According to Atlas, in the Lost Future, Makoa would end up dying at some point.

This was Makoa's in-game bio prior to the The Damned Frontier update. It's no longer considered canon.


Once the dedicated protector of an island home of the Ska'drin, the ancient Makoa has now been summoned to wage war against the Magistrate on the mainland. Though he hopes to one day return to the islands, he fears that the unappeased volcanoes will rend them asunder in his absence.

In the meantime, however, he brings both the fury of the ocean and the indomitable resilience of the tortoise spirit, as well as various naval implements, to bear against those who would defile the natural world.

Summary[]

Makoa is a front line champion able to soak up large amounts of damage and a wide hitbox, making him ideal for defending his allies from enemy fire. His cannon shots are quite slow and have a steep drop off of trajectory and damage but can still be dangerous. Dredge Anchor allows Makoa to pull in enemy champions to leave them at the mercy of his teammates. Shell Shield spawns a large, round shield around Makoa for a duration, while Shell Spin allows him to quickly reposition himself even while his shield is active. Makoa's ultimate skill, Ancient Rage, will increase his maximum health, fully heal him and change his weapon shots for wide melee attacks that can hit multiple targets per swing, making it an ideal skill for turning the tides of battle around.

Dredge Anchor

Detailed Description
Reel an enemy in, dealing damage, Stunning them, and pulling them in front of you. Deals 100 damage on initial hit. Cannot pull through walls. Has a range of 75 units.
  • This ability deals Direct Damage.
  • Can be used while Ancient Rage is active.
  • Can be blocked by enemy shields when tossing anchor. This immediately cancels the ability and goes on cooldown.
    • Can pull enemies through enemy shields however, if you somehow hook them. (i.e. Makoa walks through enemy shield, hooks enemy, and then immediately walks back out through the same shield.)
    • Enemy Atlas's Stasis Field function in the same manner as this.
  • Can be interrupted when about to pull target in, by other forms of Crowd Control such as stuns. Makoa will drop the target at the most recent position the anchor places them in.
    • If affected by Knockback, Makoa will pull target along with him.
  • The endpoint of the pulled target will stop updating once they are within 8 ft of Makoa.
  • Can pass (damage and stun) through Androxus's Reversal and Terminus's Power Siphon.
    • CANNOT pass through Zhin's Counter. Zhin will get a successful swing as a result from this.
  • Strangely, this ability also cannot hit enemies affected by Jenos's Void Grip.
  • If the target is Yagorath, this ability will not pull her towards Makoa. It will stun her, however, for 1s.

Project a 4500-Health Shield around yourself in an area. This Shield lasts 5s or until destroyed. This ability can be refired to cancel. Affected by Wrecker.
  • Forms a sphere-shaped shield that is attached to him.
  • Has an activation time of 0.1s.
  • Makoa is unable to attack while channeling the shield.
  • The cooldown won't start until the shield is destroyed or despawns.
  • Can be interrupted by hard Crowd Control effects.
  • Can be canceled early by re-activating the skill.
  • Has a small period after activating during which it cannot be immediately canceled.

Call on the powers of the Ancients. Drop your cannon and start swinging your anchor, dealing 600 every 0.8s to enemies within 20 units in front of you. While this ability is active, gain 5500 increased maximum Health, 25% movement speed, and are Immune to Crowd Control. This effect lasts 8s and can be refired to cancel.

  • This ability deals Area Damage.
  • Has an activation time of 0.05s.
  • Grants Makoa full health upon successful activation.

  • Dredge Anchor and Shell Spin can be used during the duration.
  • If Half Shell is used, a deployed shield will not be canceled, otherwise Shell Shield cannot be used during the duration of this ability.
  • Anchor swings count as Weapon Shots and get benefits from cards and items.

Details

  • The effect will only count for the first shot after landing your Dredge Anchor and only on the enemy hit by it. Failing to hit your shot or shooting another enemy will make the damage bonus disappear until you hit someone with your anchor again.
Half Shell

Unlocks at Mastery Level 2

Shell Shield is placed on the ground instead of channeled around you and lasts 2s longer.

Unlocks at Mastery Level 8

Increase your Ultimate charge rate by 25% and Health by 500. Ancient Rage now causes Makoa to grow 50% in size, resets all his Cooldowns, and increases his Movement Speed by 45%.


Details

  • Makoa's actual size and damage hitbox grows by 50%, but the collision hitbox growth (the size of Makoa when interacting with the map) is 25%.
    • This is to prevent him from getting stuck at certain locations upon activating Ancient Rage.

Lore

  • Makoa obtained his anchor from Dredge's ship.[4]
    • Despite this, in Talus' card Antediluvian, Makoa is shown as an ancient statue already wielding his anchor, despite the fact Judd was a mortal man prior to the events of Dark Tides and likely wasn't even alive when the statue was created.
  • Years ago, when asked who the most powerful character in the lore was, it was said Makoa probably has everyone beat in that regard, which implies he's more powerful than Jenos at least.[5] Though with characters like Azaan and Yagorath, Makoa no longer seems to be the strongest.
  • Makoa is one of the oldest playable characters,[6] (being older than Torvald)[7] though clearly is no longer the outright oldest. (▶️)
  • While this post presents Makoa as being 108 years old, it's difficult to determine if this is intended to be his canon age, or a random number was chosen just for the post, as the nature of the post is quite obviously not serious.
    • Additionally for Makoa, he's been rather consistently mentioned as most likely being the oldest champion (most of these statements being prior to Azaan, Io, and Yagorath though), putting him at a higher age than both Jenos and Torvald, the former definitely being over 108 as he clearly was older than 8 years old when he ascended, while Torvald has also been mentioned as being very old, similarly to Valera, and is implied to be far older due to his elderly appearance. This relatively young age also conflicts with Makoa's title of "The Ancient", and even though Yagorath mocks him (▶️) for not actually being ancient, all things considered, it's highly unlikely for Makoa to actually be 108.
  • Based on a dev statement revealing Viktor to be around 5'9 or 175cm tall and comparing it to model sizes in-game and out of game, it was discovered that Makoa would be around 5'4 or 164cm tall.

Concepts

  • An Abyssal-themed skin for Makoa was concepted around the Rise of Furia event, but ultimately never materialized in-game. This skin can be viewed here.[8]


Other

  • He and Barik are voiced by the same voice actor.
  • For an unknown reason, Makoa is missing his ears in Paladins Strike.[9]
  • In older versions of Paladins, there used to be a number of additional recolors of default champions. For Makoa, these recolors included the Aruba and Bahama skins.
  • Having been present in the mobile game 'Paladins Strike', Makoa received unique skins exclusive to Strike. These skins include Armored Makoa and Lifeguard Makoa.
