New Champion

Omen, Disciple of the Abyss

Lore

Omen was in search of greater power — the help his family deserved — when he climbed a flaming mountain looking for wisdom like that of Jenos. Instead of finding answers like that of Ascension Peak, he was met with a void of silence from the night sky. Lost in rage, he threw himself into the lava boiling below him. Before he perished, Nyx answered the prayers cosmic gods ignored. She granted him the power to do what he felt the gods should.

Now, as the Realm descends into chaos once more, Omen ascends from the Abyss to serve his Queen, joining the battle to see to the fall of Jenos and his home. Soon, they will all feel the wrath of a god.

General Updates

Champion Lore Descriptions

We’ve updated our Champion Lore descriptions for the first time in over 4 years! From Tiberius’ arrival to Omen’s attack on Ascension Peak – explore new story beats and hints of future tales for the 50 Champions given added context. We’d list them all out, but instead encourage players to read them for themselves and learn more about the Realm of Paladins!

Champion Loadout Orientation

In order to better unify our UI across aspects of the game, we’ve now changed how loadouts are displayed in the Champion screen to match the new orientation on the Playstyle screen. Reject verticality, embrace the horizontal.

Mode Rotation

Core Modes

For the Desert Omens patch, we’ve decided to try something different with Mode Rotation. Instead of rotating right at the start of the patch, we’ll be rotating during the middle of the Event Pass to provide a change in pace to players. So, in mid-September we will be rotating:

In Rotation: Siege, Onslaught, Team Deathmatch

Out of Rotation: King of the Hill, Payload

We know players have been passionate about Payload, so we wanted to assure you that it will return in the future rotation!

Limited Time Modes

Active from Friday – Monday 12 AM ET throughout the Desert Omens update:

New

Omens of Death

Unleash the fate that was foretold in this all-Omen LTM!

Floor is Lava: Redux

Return to Floor is Lava, now with more traversal options & improved platforms!

With Desert Omens, we’re finally adding in Dawnforge to the Ranked rotation, while also giving some classics a bit of rest. Moving forward, we’ll be watching Ranked carefully & ensuring the playlist stays fresh.

Balance

General

Payload

Increased Anti-Healing scaling from 5% every 60s ➞ 40s

While the reception to bringing back Payload has been largely positive, we’ve heard complaints that the Anti-Heal it shipped with didn’t scale high enough for the time per round. So we’ve adjusted it to scale faster.

Champions

Androxus

  • Talents
    • Dark Stalker
      • Increased cooldown from 5s ➞ 6.5s for each Nether Step

With this talent, it felt like Androxus practically always had 1 charge of movement up. We’ve slightly increased the cooldown to create more situations where he can be punished.

Ash

  • Abilities
    • Shoulder Bash
      • Decreased cooldown from 14s ➞ 13s

Shoulder Bash’s long cooldown had Ash really committing to her decision to engage or disengage. We’re reducing the cooldown to grant Ash a little more agency in engaging with the ebb and flow of a teamfight.

Betty La Bomba

  • Talents
    • Fiery Disposition
      • Reduced damage per tick from .3% ➞ .175%
  • Abilities
    • Hail of Bombs
      • No longer applies knockback

Since her initial release, Betty received a few buffs and she’s been doing pretty well. However, the high DoT on her first talent and the knockback on her bombs were both pain points for her opponents. We think she’ll do fine without them, while feeling less frustrating to fight against.

Caspian

  • Abilities
    • Deadly Momentum
      • Decreased cooldown from 14s ➞ 12s

Earlier this year we reduced Caspian’s ability to reliably gain the benefit of the Finer Things card, one of many tools that made him extremely snow-bally and oppressive in a match. Since then, we’ve been keeping an eye on him, and as we continue to analyze and adjust, we’re decreasing the cooldown on Deadly Momentum to allow Caspian to fulfill his role as a flank more effectively.

Corvus

  • Abilities
    • Abyssal Reconstruction
      • Increased healing over time from 350 over 0.5s ➞ 450 over 0.5s
    • Mark of Fate
      • Increased bonus healing by 5%
        • Bonus for Marked allies when others healed is now 60% of healing
        • Directly healing Marked ally now heals them for 15% bonus

With a mix of over time and burst healing, Abyssal Reconstruction can be a powerful tool – but being a mix of both types means it can underperform compared to other more specialized Champions. While this is by design, we found the gap between Corvus and other Supports to be a bit too much. We’re increasing Abyssal Reconstruction’s heal over time to make it more potent during in-combat healing, and we’re increasing the bonus potency on Mark of Fate to allow Corvus to better pocket heal while supporting the rest of his team.

Dredge

  • Weapon
    • Cursed Howitzer
      • No longer deals self-damage to Dredge

This has been in Dredge’s kit for a very long time, but some subsequent Champions have not had the same self-damage on AoE, and that left Dredge’s kit feeling like, at times, it punished him for playing the game. So we’ve removed it.

Inara

  • Abilities
    • Earthen Guard
      • Increased cooldown from 10s ➞ 11s

Earthen Guard grants Inara a swathe of positive effects to her deployables and herself that can turn the tide of a fight. That being said, we felt Inara was able to upkeep it a bit too much, preventing meaningful interaction when engaging with her. Use this extra second to get in there and contest the point, Champions!

Io

  • Abilities
    • Lunar Leap
      • Decreased cooldown from 12s ➞ 10s
    • Moonlight
      • Increased base passive regeneration by 30%

Io often requires very specialized Loadouts to maintain her potency as a Support compared to other Supports – managing her Moonlight as well as Luna, on top of the regular chaos of combat. While we continue to evaluate Io’s current status among our roster, we’re increasing the base regeneration of Moonlight to allow her more freedom in her Loadouts as well as more consistent healing. We’ve also reduced the cooldown on Lunar Leap to give Io a bit more survivability.

Lex

  • Talents
    • Discovery
      • Reduced damage bonus from 25% ➞ 15%

This has been the subject of much community discussion recently, so we’ve nerfed the talent to hopefully bring it more in line with his other options.

Mal'Damba

  • Health
    • Increased from 2200 ➞ 2300

Mal’Damba already requires a bit of a higher skill ceiling to perform well compared to other Supports, so we’re increasing his health to allow for a bit more leniency when playing the Champion.

Nyx

  • Abilities
    • Rift Slash
      • Fixed an issue where charged Rift Slashes were still applying 2s of Cripple with Show of Force
    • Royal Presence
      • Increased cooldown from 11s ➞ 13s

Royal Presence provided a bit too much survivability for its cooldown, allowing it to be consistently used after Abyssal Fortress and making it difficult to engage on Nyx. We’ve increased its cooldown to facilitate a bit more decision making on Nyx’s end on when to use the ability, as well as to give the enemy team a larger window to engage her. We’ve also fixed an issue where Rift Slash was erroneously applying a 2s Cripple when using the Talent Show of Force and charging past the 1st level, so now Nyx should be noticeably less oppressive when using the Talent.

Octavia

  • Abilities
    • Distortion Field
      • Increased cooldown from 16s ➞ 18s
      • Cooldown now begins when Distortion Field is thrown
        • This is to address a bug involving deployment of the Field

This is a revert of a previous change. The intent of that change was to effectively increase the cooldown without setting it to something outside the normal range (18 or so is generally the high end). Unfortunately, that change caused a bug with the ability. Since reverting that change, the bug should be fixed.

Terminus

  • Movement Speed
    • Increased from 345 ➞ 350
      • This means Terminus now moves as fast as Champions like Inara

While Terminus generally was performing okay at median ELO, his movement speed was among the lowest in the game. Considering that his primary fire is melee, we thought he could benefit from being bumped up to the next speed tier.

Vora

  • Talents
    • Deafening Silence
      • Increased Silence duration from 1.65s ➞ 2.5s
  • Abilities
    • Obliteration
      • Decreased cooldown from 12s ➞ 11s
      • Increased damage from 500 ➞ 600

By and large Vora’s least used Talent is Deafening Silence, partly due to its effect and also due to the difficulty in using Obliteration effectively. We’re increasing the damage and reducing the cooldown on Obliteration to make it a more viable tool in Vora’s arsenal, and we’ve increased the duration on Deafening Silence to 2.5s to provide Vora with a more control-oriented Talent. With this Talent, Vora can provide a long duration silence in an AoE regularly, forcing enemy teams to more carefully consider their positioning during a point fight – lest the harbinger silence them all and leave them vulnerable to herself and her team.

Yagorath

  • Abilities
    • Form Swap
      • Decreased cooldown from 2s ➞ 1s (In practice, this makes Form Swap instant)

Since this ability largely controls access to each half of her kit, it felt safe to reduce the cooldown so players could switch between them more consistently.
