Dealing Poke Damage is a strategic decision by the player. Using corners to your advantage by repeatedly moving out from behind them, shooting, and moving back is an effective strategy to do damage while minimizing the risk you take. The damage done like this is known as poke damage. It likely will not result in frequent and consistent kills, but it will keep constant pressure on the enemy. Poke damage will help you and your team win a war of attrition and provide targets for the Burst Damage champions to kill. Champions like Viktor and Tyra are not particularly good at poking because they need to remain in the open to do most of their damage. In comparison, Cassie and Buck can effectively poke enemies because of their longer time between shots and relatively high damage.
