Souls are a seemingly immaterial force present in many living things in the Realm. Little was said on the exact nature of souls in Paladins and how they impact the creatures they reside in, though they appear to have a close connection with the individual they're attached to, with those able to look into souls being capable of reading one's mind. (▶️) Additionally, they also appear to have a connection to the individual's physical state, as healing one's soul causes the individual to physically heal as well.[1][2] The same concept holds true for damaging one's soul, with enough damage to one causing the soul to shatter, dropping a part of itself as a Soul Fragment, with it additionally being unknown if this type of injury eventually heals by itself.[3]

The concept of Soul Fragments leads into another notable aspect and group connected to souls: the Abyss. Creatures from this dimension appear to have a more direct relationship with souls, regularly attempting to obtain them from mortals and even seemingly using them as food,[4] with the Abyss itself being filled with so many souls there are literally waves of them for ships to sail on.[5] Some Abyssal entities, such as Raum, have displayed increased control over the souls of others, with him seemingly capable of directly ripping souls from bodies with his own hands,[6] and can additionally utilize the previously mentioned Soul Fragments by drawing them to himself and creating Soul Armor. Consuming souls additionally seems to restore the physical condition of Abyssal entities as well, as shown by Raum. However, while this practice of consuming souls is seemingly only done by Abyssal entities for the most part, other creatures can also consume souls under certain circumstances, with the most notable example being Androxus, who was cursed with an endless hunger for them following his encounter with an Abyssal entity.[7]

While souls are largely assumed to be immaterial masses of energy, based on various[8][9] statements, as well as the existence of Kasumi, souls are instead seemingly nearly identical in shape to the living individuals they inhabited, being fully capable of interacting with the world and even fighting, as well as seemingly granting them additional abilities such as floating and becoming ethereal.[10] They additionally appear to have the ability to take residence in inanimate objects, from which they can physically twist and contort.[11]

However, while some souls can remain in the physical world under certain conditions such as an extremely strong desire for vengeance,[12] this is seemingly incredibly uncommon, as few have been seen beyond Kasumi, with the rest appearing to end up in the Abyss. However, when asked if the Abyss / Pyre is Paladins' equivalent of hell / heaven, the developer avoided giving a direct answer, instead saying it's more of a "light vs dark" thing.[13]

While souls are assumed to have some connection with spirits, this was never made clear or elaborated upon.
